Just the thought of home-grown, freshly steamed green beans is enough to make your mouth water. Green beans, sometimes called snap beans or string beans, are grown either as pole beans or bush beans. There are two distinctly different growing habits to suit any garden space. Pole beans grow on climbing vines that require a support. Bush beans are compact and do not need a support.
Beans are a warm season crop and should be planted when the soil is warm and all danger of frost is past. They need a sunny spot with well drained soil. Plant seeds 1 to 1-1/2 inches deep and 3-4 inches apart. For pole beans, set up trellises or teepees before planting. Once the seedlings are about 6 inches tall, put mulch around them to help retain moisture.
Begin harvesting when the bean pods reach about pencil thickness and are several inches long, but before the seeds inside are fully developed. Be sure to pick your beans on a continual basis. If you don't keep picking, your plants will stop producing.
