- Usage Instructions : When Seeding a New Lawn One 16 lb. bag covers 2,130 sq. ft. for a new lawn. Use a rake to prep the area to be seeded. Loosen the top layer of soil (roughly 2" deep). Remove any dead grass or debris to ensure seed-to-soil contact. Apply using a Scotts® spreader - Set a Scotts® Hand-Held Spreader to 5. Go over the lawn 3x. Set a Scotts® Broadcast/Rotary Spreader to 10 1/2. Set a Scotts® Drop Spreader to 17 1/2. Go over the lawn 4x. Set a Scotts® Wizz® Spreader to 5 3/4. Go over the lawn 2x. Set a Scotts® Elite Spreader to 8 1/2. Lightly rake the area where the seed was applied to ensure it is covered just beneath the soil. Water daily, or as needed, to keep the soil surface moist for at least 3 weeks or until the seedlings reach at least 2 in. tall.
