Rated 3 out of 5 by from Was so excited! But... Either my chickens are impatient or not very smart or it's hard for them to push the nipple to get enough water. They are getting super frustrated. I'm going to try to swap out the nipples with another brand nipple. The bucket seems super heavy duty and well made. It's just those darn nipples! We'll see if they can use the others I bought.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent product! I purchased this a couple months ago and love it. Keeps the water from freezing and the cover keeps the water from getting dirty. The chickens didn't take long learning how to use the new nipples.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic waterer at an amazing price! I would have been happy with this waterer at list price, what a treat to find it discounted and on sale here! Food grade buckets are expensive and submersible heaters are very expensive. I made 3-gallon waterers myself, but could not keep the nipples thawed in our colder-than-normal December. When cold weather settled in (daytime highs in single digits Fahrenheit) I had to swap out my unheated waterers every 30 minutes during the day (the waterer is in the coop, out of the wind). I was trying to do things on the cheap, but that is ridiculous. So I started looking into submersible heaters. This waterer is cheaper than the best fit heater I could find - and that heater had a reputation of dying after only 1-2 months. So for less money to get a one year warranty and a bucket wrapped around the heater, why not? This waterer is amazing. Note it MUST be kept out of the wind. Also the manufacturer states it is not designed to be used with extension cords. Since it only has a five foot cord, I'm not sure how reasonable it is to assume customers have a receptacle within five feet of where they water their chickens... I am using it with a series combination of a 75 ft 14 (Ga) and a 25 ft (16 Ga) extension cord. Since it only requires about 0.5A @ 120VAC I doubt there will be a problem. I've only had it a little more than two weeks, but it's worked flawlessly in that time. The waterer lives in an unheated coop (on stilts) with five chickens in 32 sq ft and lots of ventilation. So the coop tends to be around ambient temperature. The coldest overnight low I've left it in was -4 deg F (it is rated down to -10). Not only did no ice form in the cups, it evaporated the water that was in them. Granted winter tends to be low humidity here. When over night lows are forecast to approach -10 deg I just swap out an unheated waterer for this one just before the chickens put themselves to bed and drink their last bit before roosting. The heated waterer warms up in our house over night (and saves wear and tear on the thermostat and heating element) while the unheated waterer turns into a block of ice. I take the heated waterer out just before the chickens wake up, swap waterers and plug it in. This way I can put it in fairly cold conditions and by the time it really needs to heat, ambient temperatures are warmer than -10 deg F (hopefully). We have not had a daytime high below -10 deg F so far. But I have placed it out in the morning at -18 deg F (daytime high of 6 deg F) and it worked perfectly. We commonly have January lows below -20 deg F. Record lows approach -40. I'll be interesting to see how this performs when it really gets cold. I'll post updates as I learn. I haven't even had this three weeks, but so far I love it. It's saved me a lot of hassle. And renewed my chicken's confidence that the bucket waterer tends not to be frozen :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Greatest buy ever! I love this heated waterer, I bought it for my flock after weeks of frozen water buckets. They addapted to it quickly in about a day or two. The cover on top is an extra bonus, keeps the water clean and the pesky mice from falling in! Will not ever go without this in our -25 degree weather!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Heated Bucket Out There It has been below zero or in the single digits here in CT for almost 2 weeks. We have a bucket in the coop and one outside. They have both kept the water at 32 degrees as advertised, and the nipples don't freeze as well. We only have 7 chickens so we only have to fill them every 3 days or so. Water stays clean and more importantly, the snug fit lid keeps moisture inside the bucket, not the coop.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I love it - the chickens not so much It's convenient, easy to fill, heater works well. No ice at all and it's 16 degrees outside. I especially like the cover - keeps the water clean. Unfortunately, the chickens don't like it too much. They use it, but they come running when I bring out a bucket of water and wait in line to drink their fill. I jiggle the nipples twice a day to make sure that they are working. I have no idea why they don't like it. I don't think I would rely on it to keep them hydrated without the supplemental water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple It is very easy to fill and clean and the best thing about it its not messy ! It has gotten down into the since number and didn't freeze. Just wish my chickens would learn how to drink from it.
